Maruti Suzuki is celebrating a major milestone as the Swift completes 20 years on Indian roads. First launched in May 2005, the Swift redefined the hatchback segment with its sporty styling, peppy performance, and youthful appeal. Over the years, it has become a household name, with over 3 million units sold in India alone.

A legacy built over four generations

The Swift’s journey began with a bold design that broke away from the conventional hatchback mold. In 2011, the second-generation model arrived with a lighter and more agile chassis, enhancing its fun-to-drive nature. The third-gen Swift, launched in 2018, brought in high-tech features and a more premium cabin.

The latest fourth-generation Swift, introduced in 2024, carries forward the legacy with a new Z-Series 1.2L 3-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 82 PS and 113 Nm of torque. It offers a choice between a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT, with fuel efficiency figures of 24.8 km/l (MT) and 25.75 km/l (AMT).

Design and features: Sporty as ever

The new Swift sports a wraparound character line, glossy black grille, and smoky LED projector headlamps. Inside, it features a driver-focused cockpit, flat-bottom steering wheel, and asymmetrical instrument cluster dials.

Tech highlights include:

  • 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen
  • Arkamys-tuned sound system
  • Wireless charging
  • Automatic climate control

Safety gets a boost

Maruti Suzuki has equipped the Swift with the ARENA Safety Shield, which includes:

  • Six airbags
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • ABS with EBD
  • Hill Hold Control
  • Reverse parking sensors
  • 3-point seatbelts and reminders for all passengers

The car also comes with a 3-year/100,000 km warranty, extendable up to 6 years/160,000 km.

Swift’s market impact

The Swift currently holds a 31% share in the premium hatchback segment, contributing to over 10% of Maruti Suzuki’s total sales. According to the company, one in four Swift owners returns to buy another Swift, a testament to its enduring appeal.
