TVS Fiero making a comeback, but with a 125cc engine

Written by Nizam Shaikh

TVS Motor Company could be preparing its offensive on the 125cc segment where the brand currently does not compete. The brand could revive the Fiero name for the new motorcycle as the brand has already filed patents for the TVS Fiero 125 at the Indian Intellectual Property office. While the new Fiero is likely to come with modern features and target the commuter segment.

The wordmark on the patent leads us to believe that the upcoming motorcycle will be powered by a 125cc powertrain which is likely to produce around 9 PS of power and 10 Nm of torque matched to a 5-speed gearbox. The new Fiero 125 will help the brand compete against the Bajaj Pulsar 125, the new Honda SP125, Honda CB Shine, Hero Glamour and the likes.

The TVS Fiero was sold in the yesteryears and was much popular motorcycle back then with a 150cc motor. While the new bike may not get the 150cc motor, it is likely to be feature friendly and come with a headlamp integrated shroud and flyscreen, tank cowling, ergonomic seats, a long tail section, etc. It is also speculated that the Fiero 125 could draw its design inspiration from the TVS Fiero F2 which was the next-generation Fiero.

The patent was filed on 2nd November 2020 and on the same date TVS also registered a second name, ‘Zeppelin R.’ Both the Fiero and the Zeppelin R have been registered under the Nice classification 12 for Motorized Land Vehicles, Two-wheelers, Automobiles etc. The Zeppelin R is likely to be the power cruiser from the brand and could become the first motorcycle to feature mild-hybrid technology.

The brand is likely to call this mild-hybrid technology e-Boost and the motorcycle could feature a 1,200W regenerative assist motor coupled to a 48V lithium-ion battery to provide assistance to the engine. The motorcycle with the technology was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo in New Delhi.
