As per reports, Toyota is looking to add a new SUV to its portfolio. Under the plan of ‘Big Leap’ strategy, Toyota is planning to launch a new 7-seater C segment MPV. The car will position itself above the Ertiga and below the Innova. As per reports, we could see the car sometime in 2023. And hence if the launch goes through, we could see the car go head-to-head with the recently launched Carens.
There are chances that the car will have a monocoque or unibody construction. Given the rise in electric vehicles in the country, Toyota might look to include a hybrid powertrain as well. Alongside this, Toyota has plans to launch six new vehicles over the next two years. And this also includes a new mid-size 5-seater SUV.
Toyota Full Prepared To Launch A New Mid-Size SUV
Codenamed internally as the D22, this mid-size SUV will go head to head with the top-selling Creta. Chances are high that Toyota will include a hybrid version as well. And hence the SUV will get an internal combustion engine alongside an electric motor. This technology will be shared by both Toyota and Suzuki as a part of their global alliance. As per reports, Toyota aims to produce close to 2,00,000 units of the D22 to compete in the ever-popular mid-size SUV segment.
With this, Toyota will enter the mainstream segment, thus resulting in more command over the operations in India. This SUV will be manufactured at Toyota’s Bidadi plant. This is exactly where Toyota used to manufacture the Yaris. Toyota’s performance in India has not been quite impressive in the recent few years. But now, with the launch of this SUV, the carmaker aims to lift the financial performance of the Indian arm. Suzuki will also leverage this tech and inculcate it in its portfolio, thus strengthening its portfolio even more.
