Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has released its sales report for May 2022. The carmaker sold a total of 10,216 units for the given period. Sales for May 2021 stood at 707 units because of the second Covid wave. The cumulative wholesales from January to May 2022 are up by 16 per cent compared to last year. Toyota India also confirmed that the month on month wholesales has now gravitated back to pre-Covid times in 2019. The top pick amongst the customers is the all-new Glanza. Other titles like Innova and Fortuner, the evergreen products from Toyota’s stable, continue to lead their respective segments. Interestingly, the Camry Hybrid and Vellfire, too, are garnering healthy sales volume. This marks the customers growing trust and faith in the brand.

Toyota’s Mid Size SUV In Making

It is no secret that SUVs are the preferred body type in 2022. Almost every car maker understands this, and hence we are witnessing a surge in the number of SUVs on the roads. In fact, every second or third car launch is an SUV. The hotly contested segment currently is the mid-size SUV and compact SUV segments in India. Both these body types combinedly bring in a significant volume of sales for their respective car makers.

Toyota currently has the Urban Cruiser, which is basically a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. And the car already shows its age when compared to the competition. But now, Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are working on a new project that will take on the Skoda Kushaq, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and others. We already have the spy shots of the SUV, and as per the latest rumour, the SUV might get the name ‘Hyryder’ that Toyota trademarked in October last year.

As of now, we do not have any official spec sheet or performance figures. The chances are high that the SUV will only get petrol options, albeit in both a strong hybrid and a mild hybrid setup. No diesel options could hurt the sales of the SUV, wherein the competition will take a leap forward.
