The new Land Cruiser Prado mild-hybrid (MHEV) model shares its powertrain with the Fortuner Hybrid, which was recently introduced in India.

While the Prado Hybrid remains unchanged in terms of design or features, its unique hybrid system uses a DC-DC motor setup.

It is based on the 2.8-litre, 201 bhp/500 Nm turbo-diesel engine, which is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 48V mild-hybrid uses a 7.6 kg hybrid setup that comprises an electric generator instead of a conventional generator.

With the help of this hybrid setup, the Prado is now more efficient with the traffic start/stop function. Moreover, the hybrid system adds 16 bhp and 35 Nm of power and torque during roll-off from standstill, thus aiding performance.

With the hybrid system installed, Toyota has assured that none of the off-road abilities of the Prado have been compromised. It gets a 700 mm water wading capacity as the standard model, and the batteries are waterproof.

Moreover, the Prado can run unaffected even if the batteries get damaged for some reason. The low-speed power assist of the hybrid also helps in increasing traction during off-road.

The new Prado Hybrid will be made available in the European car market initially, while the other critical markets like the US and UAE are set to receive it by the end of this year.

Our verdict

Toyota is believed to bring the Land Cruiser Prado to India soon. However, there is no official confirmation regarding the timeline. Meanwhile, the brand has recently launched its most powerful Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid in Dubai, which is expected to land on the Indian shores soon.
