Written by Nizam Shaikh

American multinational company operating in the fields of worker safety, health care, and consumer goods has revealed that the brand has commissioned a third-party independent research in 11 countries. The survey coincides with the company’s ongoing commitment to road and transportation safety. India is also one of the 11 countries that are under the survey. The research is meant to identify the top concerns of adults relative to getting to and from home safely.

The survey also conducts their views on the current state of transportation safety in their communities. The research also concludes that 73% of the survey respondents from India revealed that they had at least one family member or close friend who had died or been seriously injured in a car crash. Furthermore, 82% of these incidents have occurred during the pandemic.

Impact of Pandemic on Road Safety

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, 3 out of 4 respondents revealed that transportation is an issue in their community. In addition to this, 67% of respondents believe road safety is more important. This is because more people travel by car instead of aeroplane or train, especially for vacation/trips due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Behaviours of Other Drivers and Related Safety Concerns

3M reveals that people are highly concerned about the behaviours of other drivers. There are also issues such as visibility and road conditions. 91% of these concerns include drivers texting or speaking on the phone while driving. 90% include negligence of other drivers, while 90% also include concerns with night visibility. Also, 89% concerns are for large vehicles (buses, trucks, and trailers), curved roads or sharp turns, traffic congestion and road signs or markings that are not easily visible.

Safe and Reliable Transportation

78% of respondents in the survey believe transportation access is an issue in their community. 67% of respondents think COVID-19 has made it more important to improve road safety so that vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians can safely co-exist as people avoid public transportation. While 52% of respondents feel they do not have reliable and safe access to roads for driving. At the same time, 49% think they do not have reliable and safe access to public transportation. Almost three-quarters of the parents are concerned about getting their children to and from school safely.

3M Safety Solutions

3M is offering safety solutions such as reflective sign sheeting, ink, and overlays. This increases the visibility and driver recognition. Studies have found that when more-visible signs are installed, crash numbers have fallen up to 46% within 3 years. The brand also reveals that pavement markings help guide drivers and keep roads safe. However, in dark and wet conditions, standard reflective pavement markings can disappear. 3M reflective technology makes road markings visible from longer distances and in wet conditions, revealing the brand.
