As reported online, the US-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla will launch its first car in India next month. The speculation is that the Model Y will become the debut product for the company in India.

As reported by us earlier, the company has already allocated the showroom spaces in the megacities. The first two showrooms will be inaugurated in New Delhi and Mumbai by mid-July.

Speaking of the Model Y, it will be sold as a CBU model, and it will be imported from the company’s Shanghai-based facility. Earlier, the brand was looking to set up a local assembly facility in India, but that plan got tarnished by the USA’s tariff war.

Model Y is a globally renowned electric crossover, which is popular among families due to its large and spacious cabin, along with a long range. While the Model Y is sold in multiple configurations worldwide, it will be offered in a single motor rear-wheel drive configuration in India.

The Indian-spec Model Y is expected to be priced around Rs 48 lakh, and its primary rival will be the BYD Seal. It will be powered by a 295 bhp electric motor, which is likely to offer 480 km range on a single charge.

Our verdict

Tesla has been eyeing the Indian market for a long time. However, the company’s big plans for India have gone to vain as the tariff war disturbed the financial maths. With the Model Y, the brand will likely establish faith among Indian consumers before bringing more EVs to India.
