Tata Motors has launched the updated Tiago and Tigor CNG. The cars now come with Tata’s innovative dual-cylinder CNG tank technology. The news comes closely on the heels of the launch of the Tata Punch iCNG. This takes the Tata’s dual-cylinder line-up to four cars – Tiago, Tigor, Punch and Altroz.

The Tiago iCNG is available in seven variants priced from INR 6,54,900 to INR 8,09,900. Meanwhile, the Tiago iCNG is offered in four variants with prices starting at INR 7,79,900 and going all the way to INR 8,94,900. All prices ex-showroom.

The increase in the cost of fuel and the resultant pollution has led customers towards affordable and greener solutions. This is certainly the case in metro cities in India. Infact in Delhi-NCR all commercial vehicles are driven on CNG only. CNG has a solution for both. This gas burns cleanly and hence comparatively produces less CO2 emissions. The cost is lower than petrol / diesel as well.

Uniquely, Tata has used two small CNG cylinders instead of one large one which has freed up considerable space in the boot. Not to mention, the company is offering CNG in many variants and not just the entry level trim.

Key highlights include:

  • Twin Cylinder tanks
  • Use of single standalone ECU
  • Direct start in CNG as well
  • Auto switching between fuels
  • Modular Fuel filter

Powertrain of Tata Tiago and Tigor iCNG

Tata offers the same 1.2-litre NA petrol engine on the CNG variants. This engine develops 72 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 95 Nm @ 3,500 rpm in CNG mode.. A 5-speed gearbox is paired with this engine.

Tata’s CNG offerings in the market and its competition

Currently, Maruti is one of the carmakers that offers factory-fitted CNG variants across multiple models. This includes Swift, WagonR, Dzire, Alto 800, Alto K10, Ertiga, Celerio, Eeco, and S-Presso. Branded under the name S-CNG tech, this is the largest CNG portfolio currently offered in the country. Tata is aiming to have a significant market share in the CNG segment as well.
