Tata Motors is bringing back the iconic Sierra, but this time as an electric vehicle (EV). The Tata Sierra EV is set to launch in the second half of 2025, with the internal combustion engine (ICE) version following later.
A Nostalgic Comeback
The original Tata Sierra, launched in 1991, was one of India’s first indigenous SUVs. Known for its rugged design, spacious interiors, and reliable performance, the Sierra became a popular choice among Indian consumers. It featured a 2.0-litre Peugeot XD88 diesel engine and was famous for its three-door design and large rear windows, giving it a unique look. The Sierra was particularly appreciated for its off-road capabilities and durability, making it a favored vehicle for both urban and rural areas.
EV First, ICE Next
Tata Motors will release the Sierra EV first, following the successful strategy used for the Curvv model. The EV variant will be built on Tata’s Acti.EV platform, which also underpins the Punch EV and Curvv EV. The ICE version will come later, offering customers a choice between electric and traditional powertrains.
Key Features
The Sierra EV is expected to have a range of around 500 km on a single charge. It will feature a dual-motor setup for all-wheel drive, although this is yet to be confirmed. The design will retain the classic boxy silhouette of the original model, with modern touches like LED light strips and sleek alloy wheels.
Will It Be as Successful as the Original Tata Sierra?
The success of the original Sierra was driven by its unique design, reliability, and performance. The Sierra EV aims to build on this legacy by incorporating modern technology and sustainability. Given the growing demand for electric vehicles and Tata Motors’ commitment to quality, the Sierra EV has the potential to replicate, if not surpass, the success of its predecessor. It appeals to a new generation of environmentally-conscious consumers while retaining the nostalgic charm that made the original so beloved.
