Tata Punch Flex Fuel – what is it?

Displayed recently at the Auto Expo 2025, the flex fuel model of the Punch looks identical to the standard model. However, the main change is underneath its bonnet where it uses the same 1.2-liter, three-cylinder, NA petrol engine. Tata has revised its ECU settings with new software, included new fuel injectors, and revised the exhaust system to achieve E85 fuel compatibility.

Currently, the E20 fuel is being spread throughout the nation as the government aims to reach 100 per cent E20 compatibility across India by the end of this year. However, E85 flex fuel, which essentially uses an 85 per cent blend of Ethanol and 15 per cent petrol, is still far away. But, according to an online report, Tata officials claim that they want to be ready for whenever E85 compliance is mandated in the future. If so, the Punch will be the first product to become E85 compliant in Tata’s portfolio.

Mind you, Punch has recently become the best-selling car in India. All thanks to its versatile engine options that include petrol and CNG options, Punch makes a strong value-for-money proposition as a car. It has also scored a staggering 5-star GNCAP crash test rating.

Our verdict

The recent display of new products at the Auto Expo 2025 was focused towards green mobility solutions. To curb the growing pollution, clean fuel and efficient technology are required. Hence, the flex-fuel cars make sense. But, for now, the main focus of manufacturers is E20.
