Written by Nizam Shaikh

Tata Motors is working on a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for its upcoming range of cars. Sources report that recently the brand has secured the first round of funding. The CAPEX is now standing at INR 7,500 crore. The regular investments in the Passenger Vehicle (PV) division will allow Tata to further invest in IC engine products. The brand also requires huge funds for development in the EV department. However, the brand will not be stopping its progress in the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) department.

Progress in the Internal Combustion Engine

The brand has revealed that spending on the internal combustion engine is still a necessity. It is being said that the market share of internal combustion engines will be around 70-80% even in the near future. Sources say that the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is essentially a 1.2 turbo-petrol with an extra cylinder. The 1.2-litre Revotron engine is being currently used on the Nexon compact-SUV.

The three-cylinder engine could be applied on multiple Tata cars but, upcoming Tata SUVs may need a higher-specification engine. The new 1.5-litre engine could produce around 160 Hp of power, the torque figures are still sparse. Tata will specifically use this new powertrain for SUVs which will be longer than 4-metres in length.

Tata New Engine

Reports also suggest that Tata is working on a new Coupe-SUV which will make its debut soon in India. Tata is likely to name the Coupe-SUV Nexon Coupe and is likely to build an electric vehicle version of the Nexon. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine could make its debut on the Nexon Coupe which is said to be a 4.3-metre SUV. Sources say that the engine was earlier planned for the Harrier and Safari, but the brand later shelved the motor. Tata will also be upgrading the electric powertrain and battery of the Nexon EV.
