Tata Motors & Jaguar Land Rover will jointly develop EVs in India

Written by News Team

Tata Motors and its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop electric vehicles (EVs) in India. This collaboration aims to leverage the strengths of both companies to create a new generation of EVs that cater to both domestic and international markets.

Strategic Collaboration

The partnership will see Tata Motors and JLR utilizing the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, a cutting-edge technology developed by JLR. This platform is designed to support a range of electric vehicles, offering advanced features such as enhanced connectivity, superior battery management, and optimized vehicle efficiency.

Manufacturing Hub in Sanand

The Sanand plant in Gujarat has been chosen as the primary manufacturing hub for these new EVs. This facility will not only produce vehicles for the Indian market but also for export to global markets. The choice of Sanand is strategic, given its proximity to Tata Motors’ battery manufacturing facility, Tata Agratas, and the Mundra Port, which facilitates easy export logistics.

Focus on Innovation and Cost Efficiency

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, emphasized the importance of combining Tata Motors’ cost-efficient manufacturing processes with JLR’s sophisticated design and engineering capabilities. This synergy is expected to create a competitive edge in the global EV market. “We can bring the cost attitude of Tata Motors with the design and sophistication of JLR. If we can do that, we will be in a sweet spot,” Chandrasekaran stated.

Future Prospects

The collaboration is set to produce two different models on the EMA platform, one each from Tata Motors and JLR. These models are expected to set new benchmarks in the EV segment, offering world-class performance, safety, and in-cabin experience. The first of these models is likely to be the Tata Avinya, a premium pure electric vehicle that promises to deliver a class-leading in-cabin experience with next-generation connectivity and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
