As per the online reports and rumours, Tata Motors will soon revamp the Altroz lineup with the addition of an affordable CNG+AMT automatic gearbox version.

Mind you, Tata Motors recently introduced the new facelift Altroz with design and interior updates. While the updates are limited to cosmetic changes for now, the new CNG AMT iteration is supposed to become a game-changer.

As far as the Altroz facelift is concerned, it is a primary choice among first-time car buyers. In fact, up to 70% of buyers of Altroz are first-time buyers.

Out of the total sales, Tata claims that 25% of buyers opt for the automatic variants. Speaking of the automatic variants, it is available with the options of a 5-speed AMT and a 6-speed DCT automatic gearbox.

Meanwhile, Tata also offers the CNG powertrain with the Altroz. The Altroz CNG is powered by the 1.2-litre, 72 bhp and 95 Nm engine, which is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, as of now.

With the new CNG AMT option, Tata aims to take the benefit of buyers opting for CNG low-cost ownership and automatic transmission convenience together.

Speaking of the launch timeline, we suspect that Altroz CNG AMT can be introduced before the festive season this year. Tata already has the CNG AMT drivetrain ready, and it will not take long before it makes it to the showrooms.

Our verdict

Tata Motors became the first carmaker to introduce a CNG and AMT combination in India with the Tiago and Tigor models. Now, the Altroz CNG AMT will not only add to the product portfolio of the company, but also increase the slow sales of the Altroz hatchback.
