Suzuki Burgman Electric continues road testing in India, launch in 2021

It was rumoured that Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, Suzuki has been planning to introduce electric scooters in the market for quite some time now and all the rumours were put to the test last month when a Suzuki Burgman with an electric powertrain was spotted testing in Indian. But the pictures were not clear at the time and now a fresh batch of spy pictures have emerged on the internet that gives us a clear idea of what to expect on the new maxi-scooter based electric bike.

The electric scooter is clearly based on the Suzuki Burgman Street but the major difference is the missing exhaust pipe. Also, on the rear, the electric scooter appears to have a twin suspension setup, which could be to carry the added load of the battery pack. In the design and styling department, the electric scooter is nearly identical to the 125cc internal combustion-powered Burgman Street but the underpinnings are likely to be revised to accept the electric powertrain and battery.

It gets the same headlamp setup, front apron mounted windscreen, front apron mounted instruments console that is expected to be revised to show EV-relevant information such as charging and battery levels, generous footboard, ergonomic seats, LED taillamps, alloy wheels, disc brakes etc. The brand also upgraded Burgman Street with a Bluetooth enabled digital console, smartphone connectivity & turn-by-turn navigation and a lot more features. This new technology could also be integrated into the electric scooter’s instrumentation to better compete with its rivals.

As of now, information on the powertrain is still scarce, but speculations are that the electric Burgman is likely to be powered by an IP67 rated motor and battery that generates power equivalent to a 110cc ICE powered scooter and is expected to deliver a city riding range of about 100 km on a single charge.

The brand is expected to introduce the electric scooter sometime in 2021 and is expected to be priced close to its competition which is the Bajaj Chetak Electric, TVS iQube and Ather 450X. More details are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks as the brand continuous testing.
