Royal Enfield is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Chinese motorcycle manufacturer CFMoto to license a 250cc hybrid-ready engine for its upcoming models. This move aligns with Royal Enfield’s strategy to meet India’s evolving fuel efficiency mandates while expanding its presence in the entry-premium motorcycle segment.

The New 250cc Platform: What We Know So Far

Codenamed V, the new 250cc platform will be positioned below the Hunter 350, making it more accessible to first-time premium buyers. The CFMoto-sourced engine is designed to comply with BSVI Phase 2 and upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFÉ) norms, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Sources indicate that the engine will be compact and fuel-efficient, with hybrid adaptability built into its architecture. This flexibility allows Royal Enfield to transition to mild-hybrid or full-hybrid configurations later in the decade without requiring costly platform modifications.

Royal Enfield’s strategic expansion

Royal Enfield executives recently traveled to China to meet with CFMoto and other suppliers during the Shanghai Motor Show, scouting advanced powertrains, hybrid systems, and electronics. While CFMoto is the frontrunner for the 250cc deal, Royal Enfield is also exploring other partnerships to strengthen its future EV and hybrid lineup.

The V platform is expected to play a crucial role in Royal Enfield’s ambitious goal to double its annual production from 1 million to 2 million units by 2030.

Expected pricing and market position

The 250cc models based on the V platform will likely be priced between INR 1.25 lakh and INR 1.35 lakh (ex-showroom), making them competitive against the Bajaj Dominar 250 and Yamaha FZ25.

Royal Enfield will retain its signature design DNA, ensuring that the chassis, suspension, and styling remain in-house developments.

Expected launch timeline

While there is no official confirmation yet, reports suggest that if the CFMoto deal goes through, an announcement could be made in the first half of FY2026.
