Renault’s stylish Megane EV makes another appearance in India
The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric has been spotted once again on Indian roads. This time in Chennai, wearing green number plates and zero camouflage. This isn’t its first rodeo here, but the timing and location suggest something more than just internal testing.
Renault had previously shelved plans to launch the Megane EV in India due to high import duties. But with the government slashing EV import tax from 110% to 15% under the new SPMEPCI scheme, the French automaker might be reconsidering.
The spec-sheet
Globally, the Megane EV is built on the CMF-EV platform and comes with a 60 kWh battery paired to a front-mounted motor producing 220 hp and 300 Nm. It does 0–100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and offers a WLTP-certified range of 460 km.
Charging options include:
- 150 kW DC fast charging: 15–80% in 32 minutes
- 22 kW AC public charger: ~4 hours
- 7.4 kW home charger: ~6 hours
It’s not just quick—it’s practical.
Interior and features
Inside, the Megane EV is no slouch. Expect:
- A massive touchscreen infotainment system with Google apps baked in
- Ventilated seats, Harman Kardon audio, and premium leather upholstery
- 440-litre boot space and over 25 safety features including 360-degree camera and exit alerts
It’s a proper European EV, not a stripped-down compliance car.
India launch: Still a maybe
Renault hasn’t confirmed anything officially, but the Megane EV ticks all the boxes for SPMEPCI eligibility. It’s priced above USD 35,000 globally and could be brought in via the CBU route.
With Renault now owning 100% of its Chennai plant and reportedly in talks with JSW for a local partnership, the timing couldn’t be better.
