Maruti Suzuki Ciaz discontinued – Sedan downfall
Axing the only C-segment sedan, Maruti has silently confirmed that the sedan market is nearly dead in India. Due to the market evolution, which has primarily shifted towards SUVs, sedans have lost sales and charm.
The only thing that kept Ciaz alive in India was the government vehicle contract. Maruti Ciaz was a favourite among the top-ranking officials and administrators in India due to its luxury appeal and durability.
Maruti has officially stated that Ciaz will remain a part of its product portfolio. This is a silent hint that the company might use the Ciaz brand name in the future, as it did with the Baleno moniker.
Ciaz – Affordable luxury to remember
Maruti introduced the Ciaz in India in 2014. Back then, the C-segment sedans were a hoot among customers who upgraded from hatchbacks like the Hyundai i20 or Maruti Swift.
Initially, it was introduced with a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel and a 1.5-litre petrol engine options, which were paired to the options of a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed AT torque converter transmissions.
Later, in 2018, Maruti gave it a refresh with new feature additions like a sunroof, LED lights, a bigger infotainment screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and other modern features.
However, in 2020, Maruti axed the diesel engine with the BS6 update and refreshed the 1.5-litre petrol engine with the latest emission norms.
The last known launch price of Ciaz was Rs 9.42 – 12.31 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
