Nissan Motor India has officially commenced pre-production of two new models—a three-row MPV and a midsize SUV—at the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai. These vehicles mark Nissan’s aggressive expansion strategy in India, aiming to strengthen its presence in the competitive SUV and MPV segments.
Upcoming MPV: A spacious seven-seater
The new Nissan MPV will be built on the CMF-A+ platform, which also underpins the Renault Triber. However, Nissan has assured that the MPV will feature distinct styling, a unique interior layout, and a standalone identity rather than being a rebadged sibling.
Expected features include:
- A spacious three-row cabin, offering flexible seating configurations.
- A 1.0L petrol engine, available with manual and AMT transmission options.
- Modern infotainment system, likely featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The MPV is expected to launch in Q1 2026, making it Nissan’s second seven-seater in India after the discontinued Evalia.
Nissan Midsize SUV: A rival to Creta and Seltos
The five-seater midsize SUV will be based on the CMF-B platform, the same architecture as the next-generation Renault Duster. This positions it against segment leaders like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Toyota Hyryder.
Key highlights include:
- A bold exterior design, featuring LED lighting, muscular body lines, and a high ground clearance.
- Turbo-petrol and hybrid powertrain options, ensuring strong performance and fuel efficiency.
- ADAS features, including lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and emergency braking.
The SUV is expected to launch in mid-2026, offering a fresh alternative in the competitive midsize SUV space.
Nissan long-term strategy
Apart from the MPV and midsize SUV, Nissan has confirmed that a three-row C-SUV is also in development, based on the long-wheelbase version of the CMF-B platform. This model is expected to launch in early 2027, competing with the Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus.
Nissan’s India-focused strategy includes:
- Local manufacturing, ensuring competitive pricing and faster production cycles.
- Distinctive styling, differentiating Nissan models from Renault counterparts.
- Investment in EVs and hybrids, with future electrified models under consideration.
