Okinawa Praise Pro electric scooter recalled in India

Okinawa recalls its Praise Pro model following reports of the brand’s scooters catching fire. The brand recalls the said scooters to check for any potential issues with the battery pack. In addition to this, the technicians will also check for loose connectors or any damage to the battery. The dealerships will reach out to the customers to inform them about the recall.

Multiple EVs Catching Fire

Multiple incidents of EVs catching fire have occurred in the recent past. These include electric scooters made by Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech, Jitendra EV and Pure EV. Since October, three Okinawa scooters have caught fire, with two injuries. Recently, a transportation truck carrying Jitendra EVs in Nashik also caught fire. Multiple videos of Pure EV scooters catching fire have also surfaced. As for Ola, a video of the S1 Pro in flames in Pune went viral.

In the month of March, Okinawa was the third best-selling electric scooter maker in India, with 8,284 units. The top two were Hero Electric with 13,023 units sold and Ola with 9,127 units. Although all the three are now facing customers cancelling their bookings, seeking refunds and some dealerships even terminating their contracts. 

Okinawa is recalling 3,215 units of the Praise Pro. The company said in a release that it is a part of a comprehensive health checkup camp for batteries. The company will repair the electric scooter free of charge in case of a loose connector or a damaged battery. 

Okinawa Praise Pro – Specifications

The Okinawa Praise Pro uses a 1,000 Watt BLDC motor with a peak power output of 2,500 Watts. According to the company, the motor is also waterproof. The scooter’s maximum speed in economy mode is limited to 30-35, 50-60kmph in sports and 65-70kmph in the Turbo mode. As per ARAI, the Praise Pro gets a range of 110kms in Economy mode and 88kmph in Sports mode. The gradeability of the scooter is up to 15-degrees.

The Praise Pro rides on 90 section tyres with 12-inch rims and has a ground clearance of 175mm. The under-seat storage capacity of the scooter is 7-litres. The electric scooter measures 1970mm in length, 745mm in width and has a height of 1165mm. The maximum loading capacity of the scooter is 150kg.
