Written by Akhil Dalvi

Japanese automotive giant Nissan has partnered with Indian cricket legend Kapil Head to spearhead its crowd-sourced road safety initiative. By launching its new multi-partner initiative, #beanissanblindspotter, Nissan India aims to identify some of the country’s worst accident blindspots. The automaker is currently conducting the campaign in Delhi and Chennai by collaborating with three major Indian associations. These include the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India (MoRTH), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Indian Road Safety Campaign (IRSC).

Goals and Features of the Road-Safety initiative

Nissan will begin the campaign on 4th February 2022, including a mass media ‘call to action’ plan. This will involve the collection of crowd-sourced data in order to pin to a digital map offered by MapMyIndia. Via this initiative, Nissan India will generate road safety awareness by encouraging motorists to bring about a positive change. To raise the issue of blindspots in India, all-time renowned cricket captain Kapil Dev will actively play a key role.

Following the initiative, motorists will then help identify the accident hotspots and map them out via a dedicated microsite. Nissan India aims to use this initiative to bring about a positive change and make Indian roads safer for all motorists. With a goal to achieve zero fatalities, safety is of the utmost paramount for the automaker in India. Nissan India also partnered with the SaveLIFE Foundation in 2019 to conduct a nationwide study into the non-use of rear seatbelts.

The new initiative falls in line with Nissan India’s vision of #NissanCares, which has enabled connections with its customers. Nissan’s NGO partner (IRSC) will then conduct workshops for traffic police personnel and other stakeholders with support from the Government. The collected data will then help generate a detailed study of accident spots via on-ground activation supported by engineering interns. Overall, the IRSC will conduct formal verification of the data for blind spots via a physical inspection.
