Tata Motors prepares AWD-equipped Harrier and Safari for next generation

Tata Motors is working on the next-generation Harrier and Safari, and the biggest news is the expected addition of all-wheel-drive (AWD) technology. Codenamed Taurus (Harrier) and Leo (Safari), the new models will be built on a modular platform that supports multiple powertrains and drivetrain configurations.

This marks a major shift from the current Omega architecture, which is based on Land Rover’s D8 platform and limited to front-wheel-drive setups.

New platform: Built for versatility

The upcoming platform will be similar in philosophy to Mahindra’s NFA architecture, allowing Tata to offer:

  • ICE and EV powertrains
  • AWD capability for both fuel and electric variants
  • Scalable dimensions for improved cabin space

The Harrier EV already features AWD in its top variant, and Tata is expected to carry forward this tech to the ICE versions of the next-gen Harrier and Safari4.

Powertrain options

The new SUVs are likely to offer:

  • 1.5L turbo-petrol engine with direct injection
  • Upgraded 2.0L diesel engine, now developed in-house under license from Stellantis
  • Dual-motor AWD electric setup, based on the Harrier EV’s acti.ev+ architecture

The electric AWD variants could deliver up to 391 bhp and 504 Nm, with a range of 622 km (MIDC)5.

Interior and tech upgrades

Expect a major leap in cabin tech, including:

  • New electrical architecture co-developed with Desay
  • Advanced infotainment and ADAS systems
  • Larger dimensions, with up to 200mm increase in length for better third-row comfort in the Safari6

The Harrier EV already features a 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED display, and similar tech is expected to trickle down to the ICE versions.
