The new-gen Swift was recently launched in India. Suzuki is now testing a sports variant of the Swift in Japan. The car will be dubbed Suzuki Swift Sport and will launch in the month of September. However, it is not clear if it will come to India. Here’s what we know about the sporty Swift.
Swift Sport – A New Car?
Firstly, the Swift Sport is not a new concept. It is a very popular car in the European Markets. Known for its powerful engine, agile handling, and excellent value for money, it has carved a niche for itself among enthusiasts. In fact, a version of the Swift Sport was spotted testing in India in 2020.
What’s Different
The Swift Sport has the same body panels and chassis as the regular Swift. However, it has some additions to make it aesthetically sporty. It has redesigned front and rear bumpers, faux twin-exhaust tips, side skirts, sporty spoiler etc. The car is also expected to be 70 kg ligher than its previous version.
Powertrain
The heart of the Swift Sport is a 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 129 PS of power at 5500 rpm and 235 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. To combat turbo lag, Suzuki has incorporated a 48V hybrid system, enhancing engine response. The Swift Sport also gets a 6-speed manual transmission for better control.
Should it come to India?
The answer to that question is a resounding YES. Think about it, we already have performance enhanced hatches doing well in India. The Hyundai i20 N-Line and the Tata Altroz Racer have proved that there is market for the so called “hot hatches”. The Swift has been one popular hatch among enthusiasts and a sportier version will certainly attract more buyers. Also, it would be priced lower than the Altroz Racer and the i20 N-Line.
