New Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot revealed

Written by Akhil Dalvi

British luxury car manufacturer Rolls-Royce has unveiled an all-new redesigned version of its 111-year old Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. First trademarked by Rolls-Royce on 6th February 1911, the all-new mascot will make its debut on the upcoming Spectre EV. Over the years, the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot has been rendered in various sizes and utilised different materials. Rolls-Royce states that they will utilise the updated mascot on future electric versions of the Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Dawn and Cullinan.

Spirit of Ecstacy: New Design Details

Rolls-Royce has remodelled the figurine to offer a lower yet dynamic stance that closely resembles the original drawings from 1911. Renowned illustrator and sculptor Charles Sykes designed the first illustration of the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot during the early 20th century. The new mascot now stands at 82.73mm tall in comparison to her predecessor’s 100.01mm making it more compact. Rolls-Royce has also ensured to subtly reshape the mascot’s wings in order to make them more aerodynamic and realistic.

In terms of her positing, the new Spirit of Ecstasy has been designed to tackle the wind with specific details. These include her one leg leaning forward, body tucked low, and her eyes focused eagerly ahead, representing the Spectre’s aerodynamics. Thanks to these mascot updates, the earliest Spectre prototypes now showcase a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.26. This makes the upcoming Spectre EV the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce ever created, during which the mascot will go through testing.

The Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge

Rolls-Royce has also decided to conduct a competition for young creatives who will reimagine the Spirit of Ecstasy icon. Serving other purposes beyond her current placement on Rolls-Royce vehicles, this challenge will consist of a jury announced by Muse. During this challenge supervised by the Rolls-Royce Programme, the young artists will create high-concept pieces that surprise, delight and inspire.

The automaker stated that each edition of its prestigious biennial event would consist of a global panel of expert judges. They will select a medium for emerging youngsters who will create an artistic interpretation of the Spirit of Ecstasy. For this year’s event, the jury has selected textiles as the medium for which youngsters will create a design.
