Maruti Suzuki has officially dismissed speculation surrounding its upcoming Y17 SUV, confirming that it will be a five-seater instead of the rumoured seven-seater Grand Vitara variant. The announcement was made during the company’s Q4 FY25 earnings conference call, where executives clarified that there is no internal development of a seven-seater Grand Vitara.
Repositioning the Maruti Suzuki Y17 SUV
Initially conceived as a three-row SUV, the Y17 has now been repositioned as a larger five-seater, bridging the gap between the Brezza and Grand Vitara. The move aligns with Maruti’s strategy to target the high-volume C-SUV segment, currently dominated by the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
Despite lacking a third row, the Y17 is expected to be longer than the Grand Vitara, offering more boot space and a roomier cabin.
Powertrain and features
The Y17 will likely share its powertrain options with the Grand Vitara, including:
- 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine (104 PS, 137 Nm).
- 1.5L hybrid powertrain (116 PS, 141 Nm).
- CNG variant, catering to fuel-conscious buyers.
Maruti Suzuki is expected to equip the Y17 with premium features, including a 10.25-inch infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, and ADAS Level-1 safety tech.
Market position and expected pricing
The Y17 will be sold through Maruti’s Arena dealerships, making it more accessible than the Nexa-exclusive Grand Vitara. Given its positioning and feature set, the SUV is expected to be priced between INR 12 lakh and INR 18 lakh (ex-showroom).
Maruti Suzuki Y17 expected launch timeline
Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch the Y17 SUV in late 2025, with an official unveiling expected around Diwali. The new SUV will most likely compete with the Tata Curvv and the Citroen Basalt.
