Beijing Hyundai has teased an exciting new electric SUV in China, sparking speculation that it could be the much-anticipated IONIQ 4. The teaser images, released by Beijing Hyundai, showcase a camouflaged SUV performing stunts on snow, hinting at its robust capabilities and futuristic design.

Could it be the IONIQ 4?

The new SUV is expected to be built on Hyundai’s global E-GMP platform, which also underpins the IONIQ 5 and Kia EV5. The teaser reveals a boxy silhouette with thick C-pillars, a design ethos reminiscent of the Kia EV5. The front fascia features IONIQ 6-inspired headlights, while the rear sports an inverted LED tail light signature. These elements suggest a blend of Hyundai’s signature styling with innovative touches tailored for the Chinese market.

Speculations indicate that the SUV might be Hyundai’s version of the Kia EV5, designed specifically for Asian markets like China. If true, the IONIQ 4 could slot below the IONIQ 5 in Hyundai’s lineup, offering a more compact and affordable option for buyers. The SUV is likely to feature dimensions similar to the Kia EV5, which measures 4,615 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,715 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

Hyundai IONIQ 4 expected powertrain

While powertrain details remain under wraps, industry insiders suggest that the SUV could offer multiple battery options. These may include a standard 64 kWh battery with a 215 bhp motor, a long-range 88 kWh battery with the same motor, and a dual-motor AWD setup delivering 310 bhp. Such configurations would make the IONIQ 4 a versatile choice for urban and off-road driving.

Hyundai’s focus on the Chinese market is evident from its recent investments, including the establishment of the Hyundai Motor China Advanced Tech and R&D Center. This facility aims to develop vehicles tailored to local preferences, leveraging partnerships with Chinese tech companies and suppliers.

The new electric SUV is set to launch in China later this year, with potential for a global rollout depending on its reception. As Hyundai continues to expand its EV portfolio, the IONIQ 4 could play a pivotal role in strengthening its presence in the world’s largest EV market. After China, the IONIQ 4 could make its way to India as well.
