Toyota FJ Cruiser to come back soon?

At the launch of the Land Cruiser Prado earlier this year, Toyota had showcased an unnamed SUV model silhouette, which was suspected to be a new generation FJ Cruiser.

Now, the first-ever design patent image of the upcoming rugged Toyota SUV has leaked online, confirming the FJ Cruiser moniker return.

Mind you, FJ Cruiser has been a well-celebrated, rugged and fun SUV in popular markets like the Middle East for years. It was in production from 2006 to 2022, before the company ditched its old platform.

However, as far as the rumours are concerned, the new-generation FJ Cruiser is based on the IMV ladder-frame chassis, which is also shared with the Hilux Champ in Thailand. It is a derivative of the Fortuner and Innova Crysta’s platform.

In fact, the new-gen model was slated for a debut last year before things changed internally, eventually leading to a delay.

As far as the launch of the new FJ Cruiser is concerned, we suspect that it will debut next year globally. Toyota will offer a wide array of engine options on it, including petrol and diesel powertrains.

We do not anticipate that it will come to India. However, Toyota has been developing the new-gen Fortuner, which is expected to arrive in India later this year.

Our verdict

Toyota is slowly yet steadily expanding its product portfolio globally. Earlier this year, the new-gen Land Cruiser Prado made it to the shores of the international market, whilst the upcoming FJ Cruiser will set the stage on fire soon.
