Maruti Alto next-generation – lighter is better?
As per the latest report published online, the next generation Alto model will be massively lighter than the current model. This weight reduction can be of up to 100 kg than the current model.
The international model of Alto is currently in its 9th generation. However, the 10th-generation model is expected to hit the global market in early 2026, and it is currently under development.
Globally, Alto is sold as a Kei car, which offers a minimal design with roomy interiors and an efficient engine for city driving. The current model is powered by a 697cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that is mated to a CVT automatic gearbox.
As far as the new generation model is concerned, it will use high tensile lightweight steel construction to reduce weight. This will enhance its fuel economy and peppy performance even further.
Speaking of fuel efficiency particularly, the Japanese-spec model is rated up to 27.7 km/l in terms of economy. The new-gen model is likely going to use a new 48V ISG mild-hybrid motor that will easily increase this figure above 30 km/l.
The Indian-spec model is currently based on the K-series 1.0-litre petrol engine. Maruti had already discontinued the 800cc model earlier. Hence, we are not sure whether the smaller Alto will make it to India or not.
