BMW offers the i5 electric sedan in a single variant in India, i.e. the M60 xDrive. This fully loaded variant is priced at a premium of Rs 1.20 crore (ex-showroom), which has made it inaccessible to many buyers.

Citing the demand for the i5 and the fact that it is available with a low-spec variant internationally, BMW is going to introduce its lower range version by the end of 2025 in India.

Internationally, the i5 is also available with an eDrive40 and an xDrive40 variant. The eDrive40 is powered by a single rear-axle-mounted electric motor, which develops 335 bhp and 430 Nm of peak power and torque.

Additionally, the eDrive40 can sprint 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds, with a top speed of 193 km/h. The claimed range of the eDrive40 i5 is 582 km on a full charge, which is more than suitable for most i5 customers in India.

Hence, BMW is considering the eDrive40 variant launch for the Indian market, due to its adequate power and range as per customer requirements.

Meanwhile, speaking of the market positioning, the eDrive40 i5 could potentially fill in the gap between the i4 EV (priced at Rs 72.5 lakh) and the i5 M60 xDrive (priced at Rs 1.20 crore).

Our verdict

The new i5 affordable variant is being planned for a late 2025 debut in India. It will suit chauffeur-driven customers who want the green mobility solution, along with luxury and performance.
