Apple recently had its annual 2022 World Wide Developer Conference. At the same event, Apple also gave us a sneak peek of the next generation of the Apple CarPlay. The new generation of the Apple CarPlay would integrate further into the car infotainment display of the car. Apple is working with a number of automakers to optimise the system. These include Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Nissan, Ford, Audi, etc. The new Apple CarPlay will likely start arriving in cars around late 2023.

According to Apple, currently, 98 per cent of cars sold in the US come with Apple CarPlay. Additionally, Apple also says 79 per cent of US buyers only consider CarPlay-capable vehicles.

Next-Generation Apple CarPlay – Overview

The new-gen Apple CarPlay will integrate across all the screens in the car. Powering it will be an iPhone running the latest iOS 16 firmware. Additionally, the system will also integrate into the digital instrument cluster. With the next-gen Apple CarPlay, users will also be able to control the car’s climate control system. It will also be able to display real-time vehicle data. This data includes speed, fuel level, temperatures and more.

The Apple CarPlay will also let users control the digital instrument cluster’s themes. Users will be able to choose across a wide range of themes. These include retro themes as well as modern themes. There will also be an option to add widgets such as weather, navigation and music apps. Similar to the new Android Auto update, Apple CarPlay will also be able to adapt to various screen layouts. Some of the different screen types currently on vehicles include a portrait orientation, a standard widescreen layout or a square layout.

Apple will start announcing specific vehicles which will support the next-gen Apple CarPlay next year. However, Apple did not reveal many other details about the system.
