Written by Nizam Shaikh

Bajaj has been gleaming with success in the electric vehicle department, thanks to the Chetak electric scooter. The brand has been selling the EV like hotcakes and the brand might be possibly thinking of upgrading the electric scooter in the Indian market soon. According to a media report, Bajaj is planning to upgrade the electric motor on the Chetak for 2022. The more powerful electric motor will help the brand compete better with other electric scooters such as the Ather 450X, TVS iQube etc.

MY22 Bajaj Chetak Electric Powertrain

Powering the Bajaj Chetak is pivot-mounted 4kW/14 Nm beltless solid gear drive electric motor. The electric motor is rated with a peak power output of 4.08kW and a continuous output of 3.8kW. However, reports suggest that the new motor for 2022 will come with a peak output of 4.2kW and a continuous output of 4.0kW. Currently, the brand uses a Bosch-sourced electric motor.

But the MY22 model is likely to use an indigenous electric motor developed by Bajaj. With more output, the new motor is also likely to come with enhanced output which will lead to a slightly higher top-speed and range. The brand is also likely to update its battery pack which is likely to offer higher levels of localisation. This could also mean that the brand might slightly reduce the price of the electric scooter.

Launch Timeline

According to sources, the brand has been testing the new version and is currently awaiting type approvals. This leads us to believe that the brand will soon open bookings for the upgraded Chetak across markets. Currently, the Chetak comes with a starting price tag of INRĀ 119,684 ex-showroom Mumbai. Customers can book the electric scooter by putting down an amount of INR 2,000 from Bajaj’s online booking platform. The Bajaj Chetak also enjoys the FAME-II subsidy benefit, as approved by the department of heavy industries, Government of India.
