Morris Garages (MG)working on a hatchback for India

Written by Nizam Shaikh

British brand MG Motors has recently launched its first product in India, the MG Hector at the price of INR 12.18 lakh. The brand is expected to launch the MG eZS which is a fully electric SUV in the Indian markets followed by the 7-seater version of the Hector, and to further strengthen the brand’s portfolio in India, MG Motors is likely to introduce the MG 3 in the market.

The MG 3 is a hatchback which will lay down the foundation as the segment is volume-rich and the brand is likely to benefit in numbers with this move. The third generation MG 3 which is available in the international markets may be introduced for the Indian market and the hatchback will compete with other models like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz. The MG 3 will come with a host of different features and different engine options like the Hector.

Other details of the India-spec MG 3 are scarce at the moment, but if the car is launched in India it will be manufactured at the Halol plant in Gujrat alongside the MG Hector. The Halol facility has been acquired by MG from General Motors, after the latter shut shop in India.

For the European markets, the MG 3 comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 106 PS power and 137 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed transmission. The MG 3 comes in three variant trims – Explore, Excite and Exclusive. The Indian-spec car is likely to have more than one engine option including a mild-hybrid engine.

MG 3 is expected to be introduced in the Indian markets by the year 2022.
