Micro electric SUV from MG coming to India?

Written by AnantaSaranNayak

The MG Comet is already a trending name in the Indian auto industry. This electric city car is all set to enter the lower end of the Indian EV market. Given its ultra-compact dimensions, boxy shape, three-door layout and long equipment list, Comet looks like quite a promising product.

We expect the launch to happen sometime in May 2023. But the new headline is that there’s more to come from MG. The company has plans to build more body styles off Comet’s Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform. The first of all could be a micro SUV.

MG Electric Compact SUV Battery And Powertrain Highlights

MG worked hard to heavily localise the Comet hatchback. The company is aiming to source all its components – including sourcing the battery from Tata Autocomp. Thus, the GSEV platform will be largely unchanged. Thus, the new compact electric SUV (codename: E260) will be only slightly larger than the Comet. We expect the micro SUV to measure just under three metres in length, and share its three-door layout. Very similar to the Comet, the micro SUV will represent itself as a compact but space-efficient city car.

As for the powertrain options, the Comet comes with a 17.3kWh battery and a single, rear-mounted 40 HP. The upcoming micro SUV could use a dual-motor set-up with over 100 HP and all-wheel drive.

MG Electric Compact SUV Price And Launch Details

We expect the launch to happen sometime in 2025. Thus MG will have enough time to localise the components of the GSEV platform. With this, MG could also put on aggressive pricing as well. But still, it will cost more than the MG Comet. We are expecting the price to hover in the region close to INR 12 lakhs to 15 lakhs (ex-showroom).
