Written by Parichay Malvankar

MG Motor India is working on introducing their first product for the Indian market. Expected to go on sale in 2019, MG Motor could launched the Baojun 530 SUV which which is owned by Shanghai Automotive. This will obviously be rebadged as a MG product for India. Earlier, the brand had showcased the MG ZS SUV during road shows, but the Baojun 530 SUV has been spotted testing and this is what could hit the showrooms.

The Baojun 530 was launched in China earlier this year. It will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and measures over 4.6 metres in length. This will be a 5-seater SUV, not 7-seater. he Baojun 530 actually is bigger than the Jeep Compass, but MG is planning to launch it at a price tag to undercut the Hyundai Creta. Now that will surely generate some amount of interest.

Apart from just being a badge engineered car, MG will launch the Baojun 530 SUV with changes to the bumpers, grille, logos, interior trim changes and other India-specific feature additions. As is, the Baojun 530 comes with LED DRLs, LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, multifunction steering wheel, leather upholstery, roof rails, body cladding, skid plate effect, and every thing else as per SUV segment standards.

The Chinese market gets the Baojun 530 powered by a 1.8L naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5L turbo-petrol. In India, expect MG to use a Fiat-sourced 2.0L Multijet diesel engine.

The primary challenge for MG Motor India would be to drive customers to the showrooms and convince them that their products are not just Chinese cars launched in the country without any effort.
