Mercedes-Benz G-Class Electric is a failure, but why?
Not long ago, Mercedes proudly introduced its first-ever electric G-Wagon. The electric iteration of the popular G-Wagon SUV promised amazing performance while doing 360-degree turns.
However, all the efforts from the German carmaker seem to have gone to vain, because the sales figures of the G580 EQ are dismal globally. In fact, the produced units are lying at dealerships without being inquired.
German media publication Handelsblatt has reported that Mercedes is struggling hard to sell its electric G-Class globally. In fact, a Mercedes executive told the publication that “It is a complete flop”.
Verifying this are the sales figures of the EV, which are nothing but extremely poor. Since its debut in April last year, only 1,450 units have been sold across Europe, which is deemed the home ground of the brand.
Moreover, the EV fanatic Chinese car market has found only 58 customers of the G580 electric. Meanwhile, 61 units have been sold in South Korea since the launch, whilst there are zero units sold in the US market.
While these figures are yet to be confirmed by the brand, what we can tell is that luxury customers are not opting for the G-Wagon Electric. The main reason behind this could be the fact that it offers nothing special, especially when compared to the ICE G-Class.
The poor 385 km range is too less for customers to enjoy it. Additionally, it does not offer any additional cabin space or performance, which the ICE-powered G-Class can not. In fact, it is heavier than the ICE version.
All of these reasons are primary contributors to the dead sales of the G-Class EV. Meanwhile, the ICE G-Class is selling 7:1 when compared to the electric G-Wagon.
Our verdict
While the luxury electric car segment keeps expanding in India, there are certain products that fail even after careful development and being loaded with advanced technologies. The electric G-Class appears to be one of those electric models that, despite being good, failed.
