After unveiling the limited edition Project24, Maserati has now unveiled the MC20 GT2 race car. The Italian brand will offer its customers and teams the MC20 GT2, which is designed to bring the Trident back on track in closed-wheel competitions. The MC20 GT2 will make its racing debut in 2023 in the Fanatec GT2 European Series Championship.
The MC20 GT2 is based on the road version of the MC20 sports car and inherits all the best bits from it. One of which is the Maserati Twin Combustion (MTC) technology. Other bits include the double-wishbone suspension, Nettuno V6 engine and the carbon fibre monocoque chassis.
The brand’s return to the race track in GT competition also represents the ideal link between Maserati’s new era and the victories MC12 achieved in the FIA GT Championships from 2004 to 2010. The brand says the Maserati Corse is bringing the link between its Formule E factory program and its road cars with the MC20 GT2. The company also expressed happiness about building the MC20 GT2 and that its customers will enjoy racing with it.
The MC20 GT2 is a single-seater non-road-homologated race car. The MC20 GT2’s design features the brand’s Centro Stile design language. Maserati says the MC20 GT2 measures 2020 mm in width and 1220 mm in height. As a track-only racing car, it also meets FIA’s race safety requirements. The MC20 GT2 features an FIA-approved rain light, FIA-spec fire extinguisher, and FIA-homologated 120-litre FT3 fuel tank and safety roll cage.
On the outside, it features LED headlights, racing kit bodywork and a multi-adjustable rear wing. The latter also offers high-performance aerodynamics. The front and side windows are also made of Lexan. The MC20 GT2 also gets on-board 3/4 air jacks. The race car rides on bespoke 18-inch forged aluminium rims with a centre lock system and slick tyres. The brakes also get a bespoke cooling system to help keep the racing callipers and ventilated racing brakes’ temperature in check. This, in turn, results in a better feel and less brake fade.
On the inside, it has an adjustable racing pedal box and steering column. To hold you in place, it also gets a 6-point racing harness. Adjustable racing ABS and traction control, air conditioning, carbon fibre steering wheel and dash and data acquisition system are also standard. Maserati is offering a few optional equipments as well. This includes TPMS, a rear-view camera display and an in-car camera.
Powering the MC20 GT2 is the same Maserati Nettuno engine as the MC20 road car. The 3-litre 90-degree twin-turbo V6 motor also gets Maserati Twin Combustion (MTC) Twin Spark with TJI double combustion control. Like most high-performance cars, it also gets a dry sump. The engine sends power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed sequential racing gearbox. It also gets paddle shifters and a racing clutch with a limited-slip self-locking differential.
