Maruti Suzuki has updated its popular Wagon R hatchback with a significant safety upgrade—six airbags are now standard across all variants. This move aligns with the brand’s commitment to enhancing safety features in its lineup while maintaining the Wagon R’s reputation as a practical and affordable choice for Indian families.

New Wagon R features

The Wagon R, built on Maruti Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, now offers dual front airbags, side airbags, and curtain airbags as part of its safety suite. This upgrade complements existing features like ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Hill Hold Assist, making the Wagon R one of the safest options in its segment.

Under the hood, the Wagon R continues to offer two petrol engine options: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine producing 65 bhp and 89 Nm of torque, and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 88 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. Additionally, the 1.0-litre engine is available with a factory-fitted CNG kit, offering an impressive mileage of 33.47 km/kg.

The updated Wagon R retains its spacious cabin and practical features, including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering-mounted controls, and a 60:40 split rear seat. The hatchback also offers ample boot space, making it a versatile choice for urban and long-distance travel.

With the addition of six airbags, the Wagon R’s prices have increased by INR 13,000 across all variants. The base LXi variant now starts at INR 5.64 lakh (ex-showroom), while the top-spec ZXi+ AGS variant is priced at INR 7.35 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite the price hike, the Wagon R remains a value-for-money proposition, competing with rivals like the Tata Tiago and Hyundai Santro.

Maruti Suzuki’s decision to enhance the Wagon R’s safety features comes at a time when consumer awareness about vehicle safety is on the rise. The update not only strengthens the Wagon R’s appeal but also sets a new benchmark for safety in the budget hatchback segment.
