Maruti Suzuki to launch Swift Sport in India?

Written by Rohit Tonapi

The Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of the most successful cars for the manufacturer. Additionally, it is one of the most loved hatchbacks in the country and is usually in the Top 10 monthly sales. The value-for-money quotient, sporty performance and enthusiastic handling all work in the car’s favour.

The model was also available with a diesel engine before the BS6 emission norms came into place. The diesel-engined Swift offered additional performance and incredible fuel efficiency. However, Indians never got the sportiest version of the car in India – the Swift Sport.

Now, images of a Swift Sport have surfaced and are going viral on social media. Although, there is no confirmation if the car is a private import or a test mule.

Suzuki Swift Sport – Spy Images Observations

Reports say the particular Swift Sport was imported at the beginning of the lockdown in India. Also, the car is on a towing truck without any number plates. Interestingly, the logos from the front grille and alloy wheels are hidden. Also noticeable is the strange cut-out just above the vehicle’s grille. Hiding the logos is something carmakers do for their test mules. The car is only partially revealed because of the cover placed on it.

Apart from this, all the Swift Sport’s signature highlights are visible. These include the larger blacked-out grille with mesh inserts and a sportier front bumper with black bezels around the fog lamps. The side of the car is identical to the standard Swift except for the additional black side skirt. The headlamp and taillamp of the car are also identical to the standard Swift. At the rear, it gets changes in the form of a new bumper with a dual-exhaust setup on both sides and a blacked-out diffuser plate. Also visible are the new dual-tone machine-cut alloy wheels.

Suzuki Swift Sport – Powertrain

In the international markets, powering the Swift Sport is a 1.4-litre BoosterJet turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The engine makes 127 HP of power and 235 Nm of torque. The gearbox is a 6-speed manual unit. According to the company, the car does the 0 to 100 kmph sprint in 9.1 seconds. The Swift Sport has a top speed of 210 kmph.

Suzuki Swift Sport – Launch Plans

There are no reports of Maruti Suzuki planning to launch the Swift Sport in India. Hence, the car spotted could be a private import. Another possibility is that the vehicle may be in transit to another country, as the source spotted it at the airport.
