Maruti Suzuki planning Spacia styled affordable MPV for India

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Maruti Suzuki could be planning to bring a new MPV to the Indian market in the coming years. Media reports suggest that the Japanese manufacturer could introduce the Spacia MPV in India. However, the MPV is likely to get India-specific changes to its wheelbase as well as minor tweaks in terms of design. Reports also suggest that the project in India is codenamed YDB and is likely to position the MPV below the Ertiga in India.

Suzuki Spacia – What is it?

In Japan, Suzuki retails the Spacia with a price tag of JPY 1,530,100 MSRP. This roughly converts to INR 8.75 lakh. However, the Spacia in Japan is a 3,395mm wheelbase boxy MPV with 5-seats. Speculation is that the India-spec model will come with a longer but sub-4-metre design. Also, Maruti Suzuki is likely to offer the MPV in India with 7-seats instead of 5. Reports also suggest that the India-spec model will lose the sliding doors to keep the price tag low.

In addition to this, the Maruti Suzuki Spacia in India is also likely to come with minor tweaks on its exterior and interior design. However, expect the same boxy silhouette and a similar dashboard on the inside. The Spacia in Japan also comes with Ottoman seats in the second row which the India-spec Spacia is likely to omit.

Suzuki Spacia – India-specific Engine Speculation

The Spacia is likely to come with a Maruti Suzuki Z12E 1.2-litre engine that will make its debut with the new Maruti Suzuki Swift in India. The engine produces 82 Hp of power and 108 Nm of torque. The engine also comes with a mild hybrid setup which adds 3 Hp and 60 Nm more power and torque to the ICE engine. Currently the engine is only available with a CVT gearbox. The Spacia in the Japanese market comes with a 660cc engine with hybrid technology on higher spec variants.
