Maruti Suzuki planning Brezza in CNG automatic variant?

Written by AnantaSaranNayak

The recently launched Maruti Suzuki Brezza sub-4 metre compact SUV could soon get a CNG fuel option. As of today, the compact SUV is only available with a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. We understand that the CNG option will use the same engine, But we will get the convenience of running on both CNG as well as Petrol, as is the norm with all other CNG options in the Indian market.

CNG Getting Popular In India

We understand Maruti Suzuki could launch the Brezza CNG in both manual and automatic trims. As per the latest reports, one can spot the listing of parts for the CNG-powered Brezza’s manual and automatic trims on Maruti Suzuki’s official website for car spare parts. As evident, the Maruti Suzuki genuine parts website lists both manual and automatic trims for the CNG-powered Brezza. So it is highly likely that Brezza CNG could happen anytime soon.

With the current powertrain configuration, the 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine on the Brezza Petrol makes 102 BHP and 137 Nm. And with CNG as the fuel, we expect the power figures to go down a bit. The SUV gets two gearbox options available. These are, namely, a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. This 4-cylinder engine benefits from variable valve timing for both the inlet and exhaust valves (dual VVT) and dual fuel injectors on each cylinder (DualJet). We expect Maruti Suzuki to carry forward these same features for the CNG-powered version of this engine as well.

Other Changes

Maruti Suzuki will most likely strengthen engine parts to cope with CNG. At the same time, it will also work on the suspension to cope with the additional weight of the CNG kit. The CNG-powered Brezza comes with a factory warranty. Meanwhile, we would see the CNG tank placement in the SUV’s boot, which is pretty much the norm for CNG-powered vehicles.

So, to mention, customers opting for the CNG variant will have to compromise on Brezza’s boot space. On the contrary, the riding cost will be significantly lower, as CNG is cheaper than Petrol. Moreover, CNG is also less polluting than Petrol or Diesel. As for the prices, we expect the CNG-powered Brezza to cost about INR 40,000 more than the petrol-powered version.
