Maruti Suzuki has shipped 2 million cars via Indian Railways

Maruti Suzuki has announced that the company has shipped more than 2 million cars through Indian Railways. This reaffirms the brand’s commitment to green logistics. The landmark event of 2 million cumulative vehicle dispatches using railways, claims to offset a cumulative CO2 emissions of ~10,000 metric tonne in the last 10 years. Maruti Suzuki also revealed that the company has also achieved a cumulative fuel savings of ~270 million litres in the last decade thanks to its dispatches through Indian Railways.

Rapid Scaling in Vehicle Dispatch through Indian Railways

Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced that the share of vehicle dispatches through railways scaled to 21.5% in FY 2023-24. This number was only around ~5% in FY 2014-15, revealed MSIL. According to the brand, the dispatches through Indian Railways have been scaled up rapidly. In FY2014-15 the company was dispatching 65,700 vehicles through railways. Now, in FY 2023-24, Maruti Suzuki has dispatched 447,750 units. This is not only safer and energy efficient but also reduces congestions on road. In addition to this, MSIL also revealed that the company is dispatching vehicle to over 20 destinations, serving 450 cities, thanks to Indian Railways.

PM Gati Shakti – In-Plant Railway Siding

Furthermore, Maruti Suzuki also announced that Hon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has recently inaugurated the India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility. The new railway siding has been introduced under the PM Gati Shakti programme. The Maruti Suzuki facility where the new railway siding has been installed, has a capacity to dispatch ~300,000 vehicles per annum. The Manesar production facility will also have the in-plant railway siding and the work is currently in progress.

Climate Action

It is also noteworthy that the use of Indian railways for vehicle dispatches supports the objectives of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #13. This goal is focused on climate action. Maruti Suzuki plans to augment the use of Indian Railways for vehicle transport, to 35% in the next 7 to 8 years and achieve the Government of India’s Net zero emissions target by 2070.
