Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable transportation, dispatching 5.18 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in FY 2024-25. This marks the company’s highest-ever annual rail dispatch volume, accounting for nearly one-fourth of its total vehicle shipments for the fiscal year.

Rail Transport: A key sustainability strategy for Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki has been a pioneer in adopting railway logistics, becoming the first Indian automobile company to receive an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator (AFTO) license in 2013. Since then, the company has steadily increased its reliance on rail transport, dispatching around 24 lakh vehicles cumulatively.

The automaker currently uses railways to reach over 600 cities across India, operating from more than 20 logistics hubs. Additionally, port locations like Mundra and Pipavav, which handle exports, are also served via rail, ensuring efficient and eco-friendly vehicle movement.

Environmental benefits and Maruti Suzuki future goals

By leveraging rail transport, MSIL has successfully avoided over 1.8 lakh tonnes of CO₂e emissions and saved more than 63 million liters of fuel in FY 2024-25 alone. The company now reports its logistics emissions using the globally recognized GLEC (Global Logistics Emissions Council) framework, ensuring transparency and accountability in environmental reporting.

Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki aims to increase the share of vehicle dispatches via railways to 35% by FY 2030-31, further strengthening its commitment to green logistics and sustainable operations.

Our thoughts

Maruti Suzuki’s rail dispatch strategy is a win-win—it’s eco-friendly, efficient, and helps decongest roads. The 5.18 lakh vehicle milestone proves that rail transport isn’t just viable, but essential for large-scale automotive logistics.

The fuel savings and emissions reduction are impressive, but what’s even more exciting is the company’s long-term vision. If Maruti Suzuki hits its 35% rail dispatch target by 2030, it could set a new benchmark for sustainable vehicle transportation in India.
