Maruti Suzuki could launch MY22 Brezza with CNG

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch a new Brezza SUV in the Indian market. The brand plans to drop the Vitara prefix on the new Brezza, as seen in spy shots leaked at the end of 2021. Now a media report suggests that the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza will come with a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) bi-fuel engine option. The brand is likely to offer the CNG option right from the factory and is likely to be available from the SUVs launch.

Maruti Suzuki is among very few OEMs in the Indian market that offers CNG option from the factory. The brand is one of the few manufacturers which offers CNG powertrain cars across a wide segment and options. The brand’s Mission Green Million, which was announced at the Auto Expo 2020, is also in line with the CNG option available on Maruti Suzuki cars. The option is also helping the brand push sales further, as the price of petrol and diesel in the Indian market has risen sharply. However, the prices of CNG is still stable, and vehicles offer a lower running cost on the cleaner and greener fuel option.

The facelifted Brezza is likely to come with a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine. The engine is likely to be offered with Maruti Suzuki’s S-CNG system with interdependent ECUs and tuned from the factory to offer a balance between power and efficiency. However, compared to the petrol powertrain, the CNG fuel option offers less power and torque.

To put things into perspective, the brand already offers the K15B engine with a CNG option on the Ertiga 7-seater MPV. The Ertiga produces 92 Hp of power and 122 Nm of torque, this is 13 Hp and 16 Nm less than the petrol option. However, the Ertiga claims a fuel efficiency of 26.08 km/kg. The Brezza is likely to offer a higher efficiency number as the vehicle is lighter than the Ertiga.
