The flagship sedan for Maruti Suzuk is the Ciaz. It might not be the perfect car in every aspect, but it is the most value for money sedan in the segment. The Ciaz ticks all the boxes what the car owner is looking for and in 2019, it was the best-selling sedan in the segment. From January 2019 – December 2019, Maruti Suzuki managed to dispatch 29,000 units of the Ciaz even though the segment overall witnessed lower sales numbers. In 2019, the Ciaz bagged 28% market share where it rivals the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento.
The Ciaz is retailed via the premium Nexa outlets, but when it was first launched, the sedan was sold via the standard Maruti Suzuki showrooms. Maruti Suzuki so far has sold 2.76 lakh units of the Ciaz sedan in India. The top model of the Ciaz accounts for 50% of this total sales figure hinting that the customer base is willing to spend more for a Maruti Suzuki. The automatic variant of the Ciaz sold in a petrol version accounts for 17% market share.
The Ciaz sedan received a facelift in August 2018 and now comes with a 1.5L petrol and diesel engine option. The petrol motor is now BS6 compliant while the BS6 diesel might not see the light of day in the immediate future. The Ciaz comes with features such as ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, ISOFIX, speed alert system, parking sensors and seat belt reminder as standard across all variants.
The Ciaz is the most spacious sedan in the segment. It might even feel more spacious in the rear cabin than a Toyota Corolla which proves why this sedan sells in huge numbers. With all the features needed already being offered, it is only a sunroof which is missing in this mid-size sedan. Nevertheless, expect decent sales performance from the Ciaz in the future as well.
