Mahindra XEV 9e, BE 6 range extender hybrid system soon?
In a recently published online report, it has been revealed that Mahindra is considering a strong-hybrid powertrain for its ICE models like the XUV 3XO. Additionally, it is planning to equip its EV models with a new range-extender hybrid motor.
As far as the details are known, the Mahindra electric models will likely get a 1.2-litre engine as a range extender. As seen on the international electric cars, a range-extender uses the combustion engine to charge the batteries on the go, hence providing long-range capability.
In fact, even Maruti Suzuki is also developing a similar range-extender hybrid engine for its upcoming generation of models, including Fronx, Baleno, and the next-gen Swift/Dzire.
Meanwhile, the brand is also developing a series-parallel strong-hybrid engine for its petrol SUV models. This powertrain is reported to be based on the XUV 3XO’s 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol.
Our verdict
The Pune-based manufacturer was earlier keen on diverting to a complete electric model lineup future. However, the electric vehicle segment in India is still suffering from a lack of infrastructure and a slow-growth pace. Therefore, going hybrid seems to be a better idea that Mahindra is considering as of now.
