The Mahindra Alturas G4 could soon be into the history books. As per some reports, the SUV is likely to be discontinued due to the split between Mahindra & Mahindra and Ssangyong. In February 2011, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a 70% share in the Korean car manufacturer, SsangYong.
The Alturas G4 was updated to be BS6-compliant and under its hood lies a 2.2-litre, 4 cylinder diesel motor with 178 BHP of power on tap and having a torque output figure of 420 Nm. The 7-speed automatic gearbox (torque-converter) is sourced from Mercedes-Benz and comes with a four-wheel-drive system. The Alturas G4 comes as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down), i.e. all the parts are imported from Korea to India and then it is assembled in Mahindra’s production plant at Chakan. As of now, Mahindra has parts and components to build about 500 units of Alturas G4 and after that, the production will stop.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 is a rebadged Ssangyong Rexton and currently there are two variants on offer, 2WD AT and 4WD AT. The interior features a lot of equipment like ventilated front seats, heated ORVMs, a 360-degree camera with parking sensors, electrically-adjustable seats with memory function, LED DRLs, smart tailgate, HID headlamps, third-row AC vents, smart key and much more. For safety, it gets 9 airbags, ABS, EBD, autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning system.
From the outside, we get to see the signature Mahindra grille well integrated with the headlamp, point to note the front fascia is similar to the international Rexton. There are a lot of sharp lines running down the doors and around the wheel arches as well. The bumper houses the sharp LED DRLs which gives the Altarus G4 a modern look. Design is subjective in nature, but as per our opinion, we feel the Alturas G4 was liked by a large percentage of the audience. With the Alturas G4 gone in the near future, the other such 7-seater SUVs in the market remain the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster.
The ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is 12.35 km/l for the 2WD meanwhile, the 4WD variant’s mileage is rated at 12.05 km/l.
