Mahindra Scorpio 4×4 pick-up spotted testing

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Mahindra Scorpio 4×4 Pick-up has been spotted testing in India. The pick-up is based on the outgoing model of the Scorpio.

Given the rising popularity of lifestyle vehicles in India as well as the utility of such pick-ups in hilly terrains / rough rural areas, Mahindra might be evaluating launching such a product soon. Given the pictures, the pick-up appears to be targeting the budget customer rather than the lifestyle vehicle owner.

Design of the Scorpio 4×4 pick-up

From the front, the vehicle gets a classic Scorpio face. It is very difficult to mistake it for anything else on the road. It gets a larger wheelbase and a longer rear overhang compared to the regular Scorpio. The pick-up rides on steel rims with no wheel caps. It gets a small roll bar on the front of the bed. There is a large 4×4 lettering on the sides and a large Mahindra lettering in red on the tail gate.

There is ample use of black cladding – on the wheel arches and on the front and rear bumpers. Door handles are finished in black and so are the the edge of the pickup body – this could mean that there is a liner in the cargo area. The mirrors could have integrated turn indicators, but they are masked. The fender badging – usually where the engine badging is located is masked as well.

Powertrain on the Scorpio 4×4 pick-up

Internationally, the Scorpio pick-up gets a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 140 BHP and 320 Nm of peak torque. It also gets an Eaton differential lock along with a ‘shift-on-fly’ four-wheel-drive system.

In India, if offered, it is likely to get the same engine and transmission options. Mahindra used to offer the Scorpio Gateway a few years back, but it wasn’t as successful as the company expected it to be.
