Mahindra Marazzo Vs. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – Crash Test Report Comparison

International charity organisation, Global NCAP, which crash tests and reports vehicles for the emerging markets, published its findings for the Mahindra Marazzo MPV and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV published in 2018 and 2019 respectively. In this crash comparison, we analyse the crash safety test report published by the Global NCAP. 

Safety Equipment:

The Mahindra Marazzo that was tested at the Global NCAP was equipped with safety equipment such as front driver and passenger airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, seatbelt reminder, ABS and ISOFIX child seat anchorage points. The crash test vehicle did not include side-body airbags, side head airbags or driver knee airbags. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, on the other hand, was equipped with driver and passenger front airbags, driver seatbelt pretensioner, seatbelt reminder, ABS and ISOFIX child seat anchorages. Like the Marazzo it also did not include side-body airbags, side head airbags or driver knee airbags. 

Adult Occupant Protection:

According to the Global NCAP reports the Mahindra Marazzo offered good protection to the driver and passenger’s head and neck, marginal protection to the driver’s chest, adequate protection to the passenger’s chest and good protection to the knees of both the driver and passenger. The bodyshell too was rated as stable and it was capable of withstanding further loadings. 

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga offered good protection to the driver and passenger’s head and neck, marginal protection to the driver’s chest while good protection to the passenger’s chest and marginal protection was offered on both the driver and passenger in the knee area. The bodyshell and the footwell area was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings.

Child Occupant Protection:

In the Mahindra Marazzo, the 18-year old child dummy was seated in a BRITAX BABY-SAFE/ISOFIX BASE child restraint seat (CRS) positioned in the rearward-facing position installed with ISOFIX and leg support. The seat offered good protection for head and chest and did not show incompatibility. The 3-year old child dummy was seated in the BRITAX DUO PLUS CRS in the forward-facing position installed with a top tether and was not able to prevent excessive forward movement, resulting in fair protection to the chest but left the head vulnerable. 

On the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the 18-year old child dummy was seated in a BRITAX DUO PLUS CRS  installed with ISOFIX and top tether forward-facing position which left the head and chest vulnerable. The 3-year old child dummy was seated in a BRITAX DUO PLUS installed with ISOFIX and top tether in the forward-facing position and was able to prevent excessive forward movement during the impact, offering good protection for the head and fair protection to the chest. 

Crash Test Method, Points & Star Rating: 

Both the Mahindra Marazzo and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga were subjected to Front Offset Deformable Barrier test at the speed of 64 kmph. The Mahindra Marazzo scored 12.85 points out of 17.00 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 22.22 points out of 49.00 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP). The MPV garnered 4-Stars for AOP and 2-Stars for COP. 

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga scored 9.25 points out of 17.00 points for Adult Occupant Protection and 25.16 points out of 49.00 points for Child Occupant Protection garnering 3-Star each for both AOP and COP.
