Mahindra dismisses rumours, confirms Thar 5-door launch in 2024

Written by Kanad Kalasur

There have been reports going around that Mahindra is planning to launch the 5-door version of the Thar next month. It was said that the Indian carmaker would launch the 5-door SUV at an event on 15 August 2023 in South Africa. Now, the company has released an official statement saying that the 5-door Thar is not scheduled for an unveiling this year. Instead Mahindra will launch the car in India sometime in 2024.

5-door Thar : More Details

From the spy images that we have seen so far, the 5-door Thar retains the the design of the 3-door. The iconic shape as well as the road presence of the car is maintained. Infact, we can notice that the 5-door Thar looks pretty muscular thank to the longer body.

The 5-door Thar continues to get elements like the round headlamps, squared wheel arches, and the boot lid mounted spare wheel. We can also make out that the rear doors will get a vertical handle mounted on the pillars. Mahindra could also offer a new alloy wheel along with the 5-door Thar.

Furthermore, thanks to a longer wheelbase, there is now much more space on the insides. This means that Mahindra is likely to add some more features than the current Thar. This could include a front armrest, a sunglass holder and a new infotainment system that is compatible with the Indian carmaker’s AdrenoX software.

The second row is also going to be wider than the current car. This could make the Thar 5-door a five seater as opposed to the current four seater Thar. However, all the test mules that have been spotted sported individual seats at the back. Hence it is not yet clear if Mahindra will offer a bench seat option or go with only captain seats.

Powertrain of Mahindra 5-door Thar

As the bigger Thar is longer than 4m, it will no longer qualify for lower excise. Hence Mahindra may not offer the 1.5-litre and instead offer the 2.0-litre turbo petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel.
