The design and development of the all-new Thar took 4 years so far, with a total of 7 design options built. The primary design objective was for the Thar to look like a Thar, but with all the modern bits. The new Thar will come with a new 2.2L diesel and a 2.0L petrol engine option. There is also an option with a torque converter automatic on the all-new Thar SUV. The new Thar SUV was designed and developed completely in India. The Thar remains an icon with almost 7 decades of heritage in the 4×4 SUV world. The all-new Thar launches on 2nd October, 2020.

The all-new Thar comes with a soft top as well as a hard top option. The new Thar while being just as capable, it will also be more powerful and will still be comfortable for new buyers. The Thar is built on the 3rd generation chassis with a typical body-on-ladder construction. It also comes with an all-new suspension setup to offer better comfort. With largest all-terrain tyres, the new Thar will try to crawl out of every kind of terrain.

On India’s 74th Independence Day, Mahindra has unveiled the all-new 2020 Thar in a digital debut. The Mahindra Thar is easily the country’s most loved off-road capable SUV recognised by its timeless exterior design and the new-generation model has been added with all-new comfort and convenience features on the interiors so that the off-road utility vehicle can be used not just for utility and dune bashing but also be used as a daily driver on a Monday morning. 

The 2020 Thar has not only retained its legendary off-road capabilities that brand has enhanced them with a more aggressive approach and departure angle as well as generous ground clearance and ramp-over angle that can allow the new Thar traverse rough terrain with ease. Here are some design highlights, key details and technical specifications of the all-new Mahindra Thar.

The all-new Mahindra Thar will be available in two powertrain options in both the Petrol fuel and Diesel fuel options. The Thar is powered by an all-new mStallion series 2.0-litre Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine that makes 150 Bhp of power and 320 Nm for AT (300 Nm for MT) of torque which claims to be not only powerful and torquey but also comes with refined NVH levels. 

The second option is a mHawk series 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 130 Bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. The powertrains are matched to a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed torque converter type automatic gearbox. The all-new Thar also comes with a shift-on-fly 4X4 manual transfer case with an electric driveline disconnect and a low crawl ratio of 42:1 and a 50:50 power split, as standard across all variants. 

The all-new Mahindra Thar also comes with a third-generation body-on-frame construction chassis that rides on the independent front suspension and a multilink rear setup with a mechanical locking differential on the rear axle and 255/65/ R18 all-terrain tyres ensuring the Thar never gets stuck in any obstacle it confronts. The Thar also features an aggressive 42-degree approach angle, 37-degree departure angle, 27-degree ramp over angle and a water fording ability of 650 mm and 226mm of unladen ground clearance.

The all-new Thar also comes with composite hardtop, convertible soft top and fixed soft top options, removable doors, a 17.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto roof-mounted speakers, on-board navigation, USB ports and a first-in-class Adventure Statistics Display that showcases information such as engine speed, gear position, 4WD mode, pitch angle, roll angle, power and torque figures, compass heading and a G meter. 

Other design highlights include LED headlamps and tail lamps, signature daytime running lights, extra-large ORVMs, washable floor with drain plugs, IP54 rated switchgear, sporty contoured seats and a plethora of safety features such as an integrated roll cage, 3-point seatbelts of all seats, dual airbags, ESP with VDC and Rollover mitigation, hill hold, hill descent control, ISOFIX and TPMS.

The all-new Thar will be available in two trim variants – AX which the brand calls as the Adventure Series and the LX which resonates with individuals looking for a Lifestyle SUV. The brand has announced that it will reveal the pricing and open bookings on 2nd October which is also celebrated as the Mahindra’s Founder’s Day.
