KTM reveals 2021 1290 Super Adventure R, won’t come to India

Written by Nizam Shaikh

To challenge the wildest terrains KTM introduces the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, a go-anywhere motorcycle with a grounds-up design and comes with a long list of innovations to tame the most challenging terrain. Riding the motorcycle on rough terrain has been a priority for the brand and the development of the motorcycle has been centred around it. The motorcycle comes with all-new ability, agility, high-performance components and a Euro5-spec clean-burning powertrain.

Design & Styling

For the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, the Austrian brand has used an all-new bodywork that features a lot of ergonomics that help the rider with a better feel of the motorcycle in all riding conditions. The large 23-litre fuel tank not only enables a longer riding distance but the tank is lower to allow a greater centre of gravity. The bodywork has also been trimmed carefully to enable optimal rider-bike contact. The sharper cornering sensation is the result of the steering head 15mm rearwards by relocating the front section of the engine and introducing the open-lattice swingarm that provides optimal feedback from the ground to the rider. The brand has also redone the Chassis and subframe and the seat height comes at a commanding 880 mm.

Powertrain

Powering the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is a new Euro 5-ready LC8 V-Twin powerplant that is 1.6 kg lighter than the predecessor thanks to the use of new materials and changes in its internal components that not only shaves weight but also improves heat dissipation. The 1301cc engine produces 160 hp at 9,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. To improve the airflow of the motorcycle the 1290 Super adventure R uses two separate radiators instead of the one-piece unit. The air ducts come with a clever design and reduce the amount of hot air streaming towards the rider’s legs.

Off-Road Equipment

The 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is a sharp off-road tool and features ALPINA aluminium spoked wheels shod in new adventure-specific Bridgestone tyres with an O-ring sealant in the spoke nipples and comes with separate Tyre Pressure Monitor system sensors. The motorcycle features the best of WP XPLOR technology which includes fully-adjustable 48 mm front forks with 220 mm of travel and comes with split damping functions and quick modification potential. The motorcycle gets a WP PDS shock on the rear. The competence of the components has been under test in various European landscapes and the Californian desert-land.

Electronics package

The 2021 1290 Super Adventure R features a new 6-axis lean angle sensor that integrates with the motorcycle’s providing inputs to the Motorcycle Traction Control, Motor Slip Regulation, Motorcycle Stability Control and forces of Offroad ABS as the system provides information on the exact pitch and position. The 1290 Super Adventure also comes with RAIN, STREET, SPORT and OFFROAD ride modes and the optional RALLY mode. The motorcycle also comes with a user-friendly 7-inch TFT dash that integrates with the KTM MY RIDE app and shows turn-by-turn directions.
